BIG THICKET ATBI BIO-BLITZ
JUNE 14 2008
There will be another Bioblitz as
part of the All Taxa Biodiversity
Inventory project at the Big
Thicket National Preserve on June 14. We
are
asking as many members as possible to turn out for a large collection
of
fungi. Go to their website
WWW.THICKETOFDIVERSITY.ORG
for more
information
and a schedule of events, which should be there soon.
Please go to the Visitor Center first to register as a participant. There
will be shuttles running from the Visitor Center to the Kirby Nature
Trail.
We will collect on the Kirby Nature Trail. David Lewis, Jay Justice,
and
Heinz Gaylord will lead our group starting at 10:30 AM, until 12 noon.
David will have a display table set up at the trailhead at the log cabin by
9:00 AM. David must accompany our group on the mushroom walk as we
will all
be collecting under his NPS permit. Fungi found will be displayed and
discussed at the log cabin.
Lunch will be served at the Maintenance Complex (next to the Visitor Center)
from 11 AM to 2PM, for a donation. Our group may prefer to bring a sack
lunch and dine at the Kirby Nature Trail after the walk, around noon.
BTNP Park Service will have booths, walks, and seminars at the Visitor
Center where you may learn more about this ATBI project. Many persons
are
involved and much work is being done to make it a success.
The Big Thicket National Preserve
Visitor Center is located off Hwy 69,
8
miles north of Kountz, TX. Coming from the west (Houston) or east
(Louisiana) on Interstate 10, at
Beaumont, go north on US Hwys 69, 96,

Follow 10 miles to Lumberton, and bear left on Hwys 69, 287. Approx. 8
miles past Kountz, go right on FM 420. Go past the Visitor Center,
approx.
2 miles to the Kirby Nature Trail, on the left, where there is a log
cabin
(the old visitor center). However, everyone is encouraged to use the shuttle
to reduce traffic.
