The Annual Gulf States
Mycological Society Summer Foray was held July 10-12 at Kings Arrow Ranch Inn at
Hillsdale, MS. Forays were made to the nearby Upper Pascagoula Wildlife
Management Area, Tuxochenic Trail, and Red Creek at Ramsey Springs, both in the
DeSoto National Forest. Interesting species found include Amanita daucipes,
the only amanita found during the foray, and Boletus firmus, Tylopilus
griseocarneus,Tylopilus sordidus, Laetiporus persicinus, and Russula
subgraminicolor.
We were treated to a delicious shrimp boil by David Fuller, and
Cantharellus lateritius, prepared by Alexandra Tussing. Also, thanks to
Julia O'Neal for the blueberries from her farm, and dessert by Lyn Tomlinson.
This summer the graduate student we hosted was Paul Scott of Mississippi State University, who presented on “My Meandering mit miscellaneous Mississippi mushrooms”. Our guest mycologist was well-known Amanita expert Dr. Rod Tulloss of Roosevelt, New Jersey, who presented on “Introduction to Amanita“.
