SUMMER FORAY

WIGGINS, MISSISSIPPI

JULY 7-9, 2017

Wiggins is located north of Gulfport/Biloxi. Chief Mycologist will be Dr. Juan Luis Mata, Univ. of So.  Alabama at Mobile (Juan is also our GSMS Co-Scientific Advisor). Our hosted student will be Stacie Carr, from the Univ. of So. Alabama at Mobile.

 

The Hampton Inn & Suites, 1121 East Frontage Drive, Wiggins MS 39577 is on the east side of US 49, 1 mile south of the intersection with State Hwy 26. Turn left in between the Bank of Wiggins (just past Hall St) and Best Wok Restaurant, to the Inn in the rear. Check-in time is 3 PM.  Registration will begin at 3PM in the Rose Room, our meeting and display area.

 

Friday evening, for dinner, we will have a make-your-own sandwich/snacks buffet, and a social in the Rose Room, from 6 PM until 10 PM, for those who arrive late.

 

Saturday and Sunday mornings we will enjoy very tasty complete breakfasts in the breakfast area at the Hampton Inn.

 

Saturday morning, our field trips will depart from the hotel parking lot at 9AM, to the nearby Pascagoula River Wildlife Management Area

and to “Shroomdom”, the home, forests and cultivation lab of our members Tony and Leilani Rosenbaum, located near Poplarville, MS.  We will have lunch on our own at restaurants near, or as we return from, the foray sites. Please return to the hotel by 2:30 PM and take your specimens to the pre-sort area in the Rose Room.

 

For those who attend the Shroomdom field trip, there will be a hands-on Photography Workshop, presented by Robert Smith, a biologist from Biloxi MS, in the woods at Shroomdom from 9:30 to 12:30. The cost is $25 per person, with a minimum of 2 persons and a maximum of 6 persons.  The workshop will teach you how to take better close-up photos of mushrooms and/or plants.  We plan lunch in Poplarville at Perry’s Seafood Restaurant at 1PM, and then back to Wiggins to the hotel. We must give a headcount for lunch at Perry’s by June 30.

 

We plan our annual business meeting at 4:30PM in the Rose Room.  Later, we will enjoy a catered dinner in the lobby area of the Inn, at 6-6:30PM. Catering is by the Sawmill Family Restaurant, who catered the meal last year.

 

After dinner, Stacie Carr will share the results of her latest project with us. Then Dr. Mata will speak on “Gymnopoid Mushrooms of the Circum-Caribbean” The presentations will be followed by a social.

 

After the mycologists identify the species collected, we will walk-around-the-tables on Sunday morning at 9:00 to hear a discussion of the different species of fungi and methods of identification. Checkout time is 12 noon, and we will depart for home. We hope to see you in December in Louisiana.
